• Route from Hanabanilla Lake to Jibacoa Beach

    The Hanabanilla Lake is located very close to the famous Tope de Collantes Natural Park, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the island. Lately, the lake has become a popular election among the travelers willing to discover the authentic charmed of Cuba. Its curious name means “golden basket” regarding the importance of this water reservoir in the area. The main activity of the region is coffee production a commercialization.

    Renting a boat is the best way to visit the incredible Hanabanilla Lake. The fishing lovers will enjoy a fishing trip catching the biggest trout of the Caribbean. They are up to 88 pounds. Around the lake the flora is mostly aquatic plants species, but almost immediately the rain forest starts to show. This area is proud to have the highest trees in the island, called Ceibas.

    The forest host numerous bird species, like tocororos or Cuban trogons, Monk parakeets, Ivory-billed woodpeckers and mallards. Also, the forest is the natural habitat for a 20 different species of lizards and anolis, an endemic Caribbean lizard.

    From Hanabanilla Lake take the highway number 1 to Cienfuegos. This city in the second largest in Cuba. Its evocative name means hundred fires matches perfectly with it character of its passionate people. The city characterizes for its eclectic architecture. The Cienfuegos Bay is famous for its beaches.

    From here you can visit the incredible Zapata Swamp, one of the most untouched areas in Cuba. This National Park is consider the biggest swamp in the Caribbean Region, with an area of 300,000 ha. Besides, its ecological importance the Zapata Swant National Park has a historical aspect. In this area, specifically in Playa Girón and Playa Larga, is where the Bay of Pigs Invasion took place in 1961.

    From here take the highway number 11 directly to the coast, but first stop in Jibacoa. This city was the first main project of the government after the 1961 Cuban Revolution. Jibacoa is surrounding by the mysterious topography of the Sierra de Escambray, but one of its sides leads to the sea. Jibacoa Beach has one of the most famous sunsets in the island.
