Salinas de Janubio is a salt lake created by a volcanic eruption centuries ago in Lanzarote. The indigenous tribes of the Canary Islands used the lake to obtain salt from the seawater by an evaporation process. The first company to make used of the lake was inaugurated in 1895. The complexity and the originality of the elaboration procedure together with the magnificent landscape has been declare a protected area by the European Union. Visiting Salinas de Janubio is really interesting, the salt and the water turns in different color creating an impressive scenery contrasting with the deep blue Atlantic Ocean.
