Lavapiés is probably the most authentic neighborhood in Madrid. It keeps the Spanish flavor of the city. The popular Madrid flea market, called El Rastro, is celebrated in this area every Sunday. In the night, the neighborhood is plenty of life, specially the tapas bars. The curious name of Lavapiés, meaning wash feet, honors the enormous ablution fountain found in the district main square. Even the fountain does not longer exists, the neighborhood has kept this name. In recent studies, archeologist found that the Jewish quarter was establish here until 1942, when the Jews were expelled from Spain.
